FROM VISION TO THE EXTRAORDINARY
Almost three decades ago, we began Taber & Company with a passion for creating extraordinary work by hand. Today, our work spans the country—from historically significant restorations and iconic hospitality properties to expansive new-build residences, Spanish haciendas, Mediterranean classics, mountain retreats and waterfront estates—all created with an uncompromising commitment to authenticity.
Architects, designers, builders and homeowners bring us their vision—sometimes fully drawn, sometimes still taking shape—and we bring it to life through an unusually broad range of capabilities. Architectural woodwork, one-of-a-kind doors, furniture, cabinetry and hand-forged iron are all created by our team, under one roof.
Our involvement begins long before a piece reaches the workbench. We work with the highest-quality hardwoods, milling much of our lumber ourselves and carrying an intimate understanding of the material through every stage of the work.
Under John’s creative direction, we look beyond what is on paper to understand the intent behind it—bringing experience, creativity and the unique talents of our team to the details that can take a project to its highest level.
We know no limits.
We had the pleasure of visiting with architect Mark Candelaria - a true gentleman and extraordinary talent in every sense. The Candelaria portfolio of beautiful homes speaks volumes, each making its own unique statement. It’s a fabulous journey to work with the team that brings his designs to life. In this episode we dive into our shared appreciation for true craftsmanship and the quest to keep it alive.
THE FIRST DOOR
The first door we built in 2001 is a true testament to the materials we choose, the way we work, and the enduring nature of what we create.
We have always been passionate about mesquite. One of the most stable hardwoods, it grows in some of the harshest conditions—extreme heat, intense sun, monsoons and even snow. That resilience is reflected in the extraordinary character of the wood itself.
No two trees are alike. When we mill a tree, we keep its lumber together, preserving the continuity of its grain rather than mixing it with another. Each tree has its own character and its own story, and we believe the finished work should honor it.
More than two decades later, this door continues to stand in full sun. Our completely natural finish—created from our own custom blends of stains, oils and waxes—allows the wood to be nourished and renewed while preserving the depth and character it has developed over time.
We continue to care for this door today, just as we have since it was installed. For us, it is a testament not only to the remarkable resilience of mesquite, but to the lasting beauty of work created by hand and made to endure.
